That’s why we place so much emphasis on proper excavation, soil stabilization when necessary, drainage, quality aggregate, and proper compaction. When these systems are installed correctly, they are designed to provide decades of performance.
A System That Can Be Repaired
One of the biggest advantages of both interlocking pavers and SRW walls is that they are repairable.
Over the lifetime of a property, underground utilities such as water lines, sewer pipes, electrical conduits, gas lines, and drainage systems may need to be repaired or replaced.
With an interlocking paver system, the affected area can typically be lifted, the repair completed, and the same pavers reinstalled with little to no evidence that work was ever performed.
Likewise, if work ever needs to be completed behind or around a properly constructed Segmental Retaining Wall, individual wall blocks can often be removed and reset without demolishing the entire structure.
Concrete and asphalt simply cannot offer this advantage. Once they are cut or jackhammered, they must be patched or replaced, often leaving visible repairs and creating additional expense.
Built to Handle Freeze-Thaw Conditions
Living in West Virginia means dealing with freezing winters, hot summers, and constantly changing ground conditions.
Unlike rigid concrete slabs or poured retaining walls, interlocking pavers and SRW walls are flexible systems made up of individual units that work together. This allows them to better accommodate small amounts of natural ground movement caused by seasonal freeze-thaw cycles when installed over a properly prepared foundation.
Proven Around the World
Interlocking pavers are far from a new idea.
Throughout Europe, stone and concrete pavers have been used on roads, city streets, plazas, and public spaces for hundreds of years. Many of these historic streets remain in service today because individual pavers can be removed whenever underground utilities require maintenance and then reinstalled once the work is complete.
Instead of demolishing entire roadways, many European cities simply close a street overnight, remove the pavers, complete the repair, and relay the same surface before reopening traffic. These proven construction methods have stood the test of time, and we use those same principles here in the United States.
Segmental Retaining Walls have an equally impressive history. The concept of stacked masonry walls has been used for centuries throughout the world. Historic structures—including portions of the Great Wall of China—demonstrate the incredible longevity of properly built masonry structures. While today’s SRW systems use modern engineering, concrete wall units, drainage stone, and geogrid reinforcement, they continue the same philosophy of building structures that are designed to last for generations.
