We have a down spout replacement to do in a few weeks under a patio that has failed, and it brought me here to mention a few things we do when it comes to burying down spouts for a successful down spout install. A lot of times hardscaping will come with burying down spouts to get water away from the patio. A few points below!
• Never use corrugated pipe and rather use something like a sdr 35 pipe. Corrugated pipe leaves room for water to sit in the rigid surface. Sdr 35 is a much stronger smoother pipe to allow for water to run down to the exit point freely.
• Always use a clean out when installing a buried down spout. If the down spout ever clogs you want a way to be able to clean it without pulling the whole pipe up.
• In a freezing climate like we deal with around a pop up there should be at least 3’ of stone around the pop up with holes drilled in the last 1-2’ of pipe so that excess water can get out of the pipe and not freeze in the winter.
