Retaining Walls Up to 3 Feet High
Many homeowners are very familiar with retaining walls, since these structures are commonly required to restrain soil on a slope that it would not naturally keep to. The rigidity of the retaining wall is what keeps the soil in place, and without the wall, all that soil would probably wash away with the first heavy rain.
These structures are routinely designed for properties that have severely sloping areas, where damage could occur through natural erosion and heavy rainfall. Or, they can be used to add a beautiful feature to your outdoor space, whether complimenting another aspect or on its own.
At Mountain Strong Landscaping, we will be happy to examine your property to determine how a retaining wall might be advantageous in your conservation and decoration efforts outside.
Retaining Wall Design
Constructing a retaining wall any higher than three feet high will expose it to tremendous pressure from the soil, and will call for some serious design considerations. When soil becomes saturated, it can exert a great deal of pressure on any kind of retaining wall attempting to hold back the soil.
This can lead to cracks, breaks, and gradual deterioration of a retaining wall – and that’s why careful design is necessary when you’re considering the installation of a wall.
Since every home and yard is different, it stands to reason that every retaining wall would have to be designed differently as well, in order to be effective. We don’t use a cookie-cutter approach, and try to fit a ready-made design to your landscape and surroundings.
We recognize that every job needs to receive custom treatment, so it takes into account all the various details of your environment. All our custom designs will be developed so as to avoid the possibility of a breakdown or failure, while still retaining their aesthetic appeal and functionality.

Retaining Wall Installation
The process for installing a retaining wall will be somewhat different in all cases, due to the differing circumstances associated with each project. However, the basic steps that we follow for installation of your retaining wall will follow this general outline:
- Determine the layout: First, we need to mark off the dimensions accurately.
- Dig a trench: It’s very important to create a level base after digging the trench, so the first course can be half-covered in the trench.
- Lay the base: The base must be solid so it won’t wash away – gravel or some other material is needed.
- Install the first course: The first course of blocks must be installed in the center of the trench, then the space between the first course and the landscape must be filled in (with gravel or substitute again).
- Cut end blocks: In most cases, every other course will end with a half-block, and these need to be cut to the needed size.
- Lay additional courses: Now the additional courses can be laid, but it will be necessary to ensure that each successive course is level.
- Install a drainpipe: If you live in an area that gets frequent or heavy rains, it will be a good idea to install a drainpipe behind the wall.
- Backfill the wall: After all courses have been laid, it will be possible to backfill against the retaining wall to establish a secure structure.
- Finish up: Complete the wall with a layer of capstone blocks, brush off all debris, add in any plants for aesthetic appeal.
