Soil Stabilization for Paver Patios & Walkways: The Foundation of a Long-Lasting Hardscape

One of the biggest reasons patios and walkways fail isn’t the pavers—it’s what’s underneath them.

At Mountain Strong Landscaping, we believe that a beautiful hardscape is only as good as the foundation beneath it. That’s why we take soil stabilization seriously on every project we build throughout Martinsburg, Inwood, Hedgesville, Charles Town, Shepherdstown, Berkeley County, and Jefferson County.

Why Clay Soil Creates Problems

More than 50% of the United States is covered by clay-rich soils, making it one of the most common challenges for hardscape construction. Clay expands when it becomes wet and shrinks as it dries. During the winter, freeze-thaw cycles can cause even more movement, leading to settling, uneven pavers, and costly repairs if the soil isn’t properly stabilized.

Unfortunately, many installations simply place stone over unstable clay and hope for the best. Over time, that movement can transfer directly into the paver surface.

Our Soil Stabilization Process

When we encounter soft or clay-heavy soils, we don’t ignore the problem—we correct it before the base is installed.

1. Chemical Soil Amendment

We begin by incorporating Type S lime into clay soils. The lime reacts with the clay, reducing its plasticity while increasing its strength and load-bearing capacity. This chemical stabilization creates a much more stable subgrade for your paver system.

2. Mechanical Stabilization with #57 Stone

After amending the soil, we compact clean #57 stone into the subgrade. This helps open the soil structure, improves drainage, and creates a stronger transition between the native soil and the stone base. Proper compaction is essential for building a foundation that will resist settling over time.

3. Geogrid Reinforcement When Needed

Some sites require additional reinforcement. When soil conditions warrant it, we install DriveGrid (biaxial geogrid) within the base structure. The geogrid locks the aggregate together, distributes loads more evenly, and greatly increases the stability of the foundation.

This extra step is especially valuable on weaker soils or areas that will experience heavier loading.

Why This Matters

Skipping soil stabilization may save money initially, but it often results in:

  • Sunken patios
  • Uneven walkways
  • Trip hazards
  • Shifting pavers
  • Expensive repairs years later

A properly stabilized foundation significantly improves the long-term performance of your hardscape investment.

Building Hardscapes That Last

Every property is different, and every soil condition deserves the right solution. By combining chemical stabilization with Type S lime, mechanical stabilization using compacted #57 stone, and DriveGrid reinforcement when necessary, we build hardscapes designed to withstand West Virginia’s changing seasons and freeze-thaw cycles.

Our goal isn’t just to install beautiful patios and walkways—it’s to build foundations that continue performing for decades.

If you’re planning a new patio, walkway, driveway, or retaining wall in Martinsburg, Inwood, Hedgesville, Charles Town, Shepherdstown, Berkeley County, or Jefferson County, choose a contractor who understands what lies beneath the surface.

At Mountain Strong Landscaping, we believe that lasting quality starts from the ground up

We are so delighted with our new patio installed by Mountain Strong! Working with Keegan was a pleasure. He had a lot of good suggestions, was willing to sketch out our concepts to help us envision what the final patio would look like, and was very patient as we changed what we wanted multiple times. He and his brother did the installation when they said they would—and they finished right on time. They picked up all the debris and equipment and restored the lawn where it needed new grass. The patio looks great—and we will enjoy it for years to come!

Keegan and his crew did an amazing job. I got a 6x8 patio at the bottom of my stairs to help with my dog mud situation, and they created a beautiful chevron pattern landing that fits with my deck and house style. Strongly recommend!

As a small business wonder myself, it was great to see Keegan with Mountain Strong Landscaping eager and willing to earn your business! He was flexible with my time frame, had great communication, provided ideas and worked well with his employees to get the job done! Keegan had posted on social media a patio that caught my attention. I screenshot it and looked at it often. As I am not a very good visualizer, it impressed me how this patio work I saw of his seemed to be the perfect fit for my home. It has since came to life, and I couldn’t be happier! It is Winter, so I have yet to enjoy the patio full affect - but I can’t wait! If you are looking for hardscaping - Keegan is your man!
